Camron-Stanford House Wants You!

Whether you want to learn about local history, become a history detective or take part in the creation of exciting new exhibits . . . we have a place for you.

Beginning Tuesday, September 12, 2017 the Camron-Stanford House on Lake Merritt will offer a 6-week Tour Guide Training program. We are looking for enthusiastic, outgoing volunteers to become tour guides. Whether you want to learn about local history, become a history detective or take part in the creation of exciting new exhibits . . . we have a place for you. The program will explore local history and architecture, the decorative arts and domestic life of the Victorian era and the history of the families who lived at Camron-Stanford House.

We are very pleased that Julie Muñiz will be leading this year’s class. Julie M. Muñiz is the former Associate Curator of Design and Decorative Arts at the Oakland Museum of California where she managed the collection of historical and contemporary craft objects. At the OMCA, Ms. Muñiz oversaw the installation of craft, decorative arts, and design as the Museum underwent a major renovation and reinterpretation of its galleries. An avid lover of 3-dimensional art and design, she earned her MA from the Bard Graduate Center for Studies in the Decorative Art, Design, and Culture in New York City.

  • Classes start Tuesday, September 12 at 6:30 p.m. and run for 6 weeks
  • Tuition is $50 per person (including an annual museum membership)
  • A printed handbook, supplementary books and a DVD are included in the tuition
  • All classes (except the Betty Marvin field trip) are held in exhibit galleries of Camron-Stanford House
  • Parking for classes is available on site

No previous guide experience is necessary, but curiosity and desire to share what you’ve learned are essential! The House was built in 1876 and is not fully accessible. Prospective guides must be able to climb stairs and stand for up to an hour while giving tours.

Program graduates are expected to partner with an experienced guide and give at least one tour per month at Camron-Stanford House for twelve months after graduation.

To apply, download the Application, complete and mail it to Julie Muñiz, Camron-Stanford House, 1418 Lakeside Dr., Oakland, CA 94612.
